If this is the first time, you hear about Cold Brewed Coffee. We are excited to be able to share with you exactly what it is. So, what is cold brew coffee?
By definition, it is merely the process of steeping coffee grounds at room temperature or in the refrigerator for a certain amount of time. This process's result is much different from what you would get by merely cooling down and adding ice to hot brewed coffee. The brewing process's lack of heat prevents many of the coffee's solubles from completely dissolving, resulting in much lower acidity, incredible smoothness, greater sweetness, and generally little to no bitterness. The correct brewing time and proper coffee to water ratio are necessary to give the water more time to extract those solubles from the coffee grounds.
Cold Brewing Basics
1. First, you must have a cold brew coffee maker like ours. It must have a filter of some kind to make sure the coffee grounds stay out of the water during the steeping (brewing) process.
2. Choose a coffee you love!
At the Cold Brewed Coffee Company, we have our signature blend coffees. Take a look here. Light, medium, and dark roasts ground coarse. Perfect for cold brewing.
3. Begin with fresh coffee grounds and filtered water.
- If not using our coffee and starting with whole beans, the coffee should be ground on the coarsest setting.
- You will need a 1:4 ratio of coffee to water.
- Using our Cold Brew Coffee Maker, we used 2 cups of coffee with 8 cups of water.
4. Place grounds into the filter
5. Pour the pre-measured, room temperature or colder water over the grounds.
6. Cover the coffee maker with our latch-lid design to seal in flavor and steep in the refrigerator for 12-15 hours, keeping in mind that the longer you let it brew, the stronger and more intense the coffee will be.
7. Remove the filter with coffee grounds.
8. Serve and enjoy.
9. Remember to put back the rubber seal before closing to lock in the flavor.
7 Reasons Why Cold Brew Coffee Is Better Than Regular Brewed Coffee
1. Taste
The taste of cold brew is superior to that of regular iced coffee. Making cold brew involves steeping the coffee grounds in cold water for at least 12 hours, which produces a much more condensed flavor. It also eliminates bitterness because of the brewing process. Hot water causes these bitter coffee elements to be released, but steeping coffee in ice-cold water prevents this from occurring and causes the beans to have a naturally sweeter flavor overall.
2. Less Acidic
Brewing the coffee using cold water produces much lower acidity levels, making it easier for many people's digestive systems. If you have a sensitive stomach but love to drink coffee, we recommend cold-brewed coffee. Cold brew coffee has up to 65% less acidity than regular coffee because there is not enough hot water that pulls out the oils carrying acid in the coffee beans. The result is a much smoother taste.
3. Sweeter and smoother
Because the coffee grounds aren't exposed to high temps, cold brew coffee usually tastes more flavorful and less bitter. Some people find that they need less sweetener and cream when drinking cold brew. You will notice how much smoother and velvety it is to drink.
4. No Waste
You can use the cold brew concentrate to make a coffee cup (hot or cold) at your preferred strength, one cup at a time. And the concentrate stays good in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
5. Hot or Cold
You can serve cold brew cold or hot. It's easy to make iced coffee — add cold water and ice to the concentrate. For hot coffee, you boil water and add it to your cold brew concentrate based on strength. You can also heat it in the microwave if you're in a rush.
6. Caffeine Boost
Thanks to the long steeping process, cold brew's caffeine-to-water ratio is approximately 1:60 compared with the usual caffeine drip ratio of around 1:20. Caffeine kick anyone? Since you will dilute with water and creamer to your desired strength, you can still control how much caffeine is in your final drink.
7. Youthfulness
Coffee is known as the best beverage for anti-aging effects. That's because of those antioxidants again. Antioxidants can help to protect your skin from harmful chemicals found in the air and from the sun's damaging UV rays, helping to keep your skin supple, moisturized, and youthful.
What are you waiting for? It is time to get cold brewing and enjoy the best cup of coffee you ever had.
